Connor

Portrait of my only son Connor, who is 9 at the time of this photo in 2019.

This series of my kids was shot as low key. Low key photography is a style that uses mainly dark tones and shadows to create a dramatic and moody image. The subject is typically illuminated by one or more light sources against a black or dark background, resulting in high contrast and deep shadows. It requires careful lighting control and specialized equipment to shape and control the light.

In this shot, we’re in the garage without any background at all. I was able to achieve such a dark background by using a single strobe to light the face. I adjusted the tone, balance, exposure, and grain, as well as added the lighting effects on the edges using masks in Lightroom.
